The members of the United Nations Security Council and the African Union Peace and Security Council held their 12th Annual Joint Consultative Meeting in New York on 19 July 2018.

The supreme organ of the African Union, the Assembly, which comprises Heads of State and Government of all the 55 African countries, held its 31st ordinary session. The Assembly was the culmination of the statutory meetings and was preceded by the meetings of the Executive Council and the Permanent Representatives Committee.

The delegates met at the African Union Mission to the United Nations to discuss about the opportunities and challenges that the field of statistics if facing in Africa. They further discussed strategies on how to enhance the quality and quantity of statistics in the continent.

The MoU is a concrete step towards the implementation of the “Joint UN–AU Framework for Enhanced Partnership in Peace and Security” signed on 19 April 2017 by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat. The MoU will further strengthen coordination of UN-AU efforts and contribute to a more predictable and strategic partnership in the areas of conflict prevention, political dialogue, national reconciliation, democratic governance and human rights.
